Yellow-bellied marmots are a common sight in the hills surrounding the St. Mary Lower Campground southwest of Lethbridge. The animals are larger than gophers (Richardson ground squirrels) and tend to stay close by the safety of a hole or burrow in rocks. A dead end loop of the St Mary River in the lower campground provides plenty of wildlife habitat for campers and day use patrons to see.
