Watching the world die

Photo Randy Vanderveen, Graffiti on a bridge in Yuma, Arizona.

Several years ago when my wife and I were in Arizona visiting her folks, we came across this artistic creation painted under one of the bridges in Yuma.

The artist is very talented and is wasting his or her time doing graffiti, however that is not what I am going to write about.

It is the saying beside the eye. Watching the World Die. Are we sometimes guilty of that?

When we hear of needs here in our  home town, in Canada, in North America, and around the world do we just sit on our hands and watch the news stories or do we take action and try to do something.

Often it is easy to just sit back and think," The government should do something" "It would be good if (fill in the blank) would work at getting food to those people". We have an obligation too.

The past few weeks the news has been filled with plenty of stories about people around the world who need our help both financial and prayer. Indonesia, the Philippines, and Japan all were hit by tropical storms, Samoa and American Samoa by a tsunami and east Africa by a famine that continues to grow daily.

We just finished Thanksgiving in Canada and our American neighbours will be celebrating their version in November. Christmas falls close behind. During a time of thanksgiving and giving now is the perfect time to stop watching and start doing. The only thing worse than the watching is to close our eyes and try to ignore the work that needs to be done.
